Whenever I remove an English Elm (Ulmus minor var. vulgaris) I always imagine how big these indigenous species used to get and how many there were on island. I only remember them as boy as I missed out on climbing them as the “Dutch Elm Disease” arrived on Guernsey’s shores years before I became a Tree surgeon.

The sun has been shining giving the sea that inviting turquoise colour and the complimenting sound of the gentle waves rolling in has tempted me in for a refreshing dip on some of our south coast beaches.  The smell of the flowers and hearing the various birds singing on the walks really puts me in a relaxed state.  

There is something quite calming about being surrounded by greenery that a nice hedge provides. It can shelter wildlife like birds and hedgehogs which are always welcoming to see and adds to the joy of having a garden.
